Well, this was an old fashioned saga if ever there was one. However, I'm not sure if I'm cut out for old fashioned sagas. The span of the book was a little too broad for my liking; and the agenda about the injured South and loss of the old ways was too sweeping. I also think that my sensibilities are too modern to lose myself in a story where the woman has to be managed and put in her place. Taming of the Shrew, anyone?

I watched the movie with my Mom many years ago and always meant to read the book because my Mom loved it so much. I'm really glad I did, it just feels like an important piece of literature. It's so beautifully written and the characters are dynamically written with both admirably personality traits and flaws. Sure there is blatant racism that is a little hard to stomach at times, but i think we're mature enough to handle reading a part of our history. It's a long book, but very engrossing. I rec

Read this book when I was either in high school or college and absolutely loved it. I'm sure I was caught up in the Scarlett/Rhett romance. Now almost 20 years later it's a bit harder to read. It's hard to stomach such an romanticized version of the South prior to the Civil War. It also asks us to read quite a bit about one of the most unsympathetic creatures possible.
