What Members Thought

This is timeless and provocative. It smacks the reader in the face with hard to stomach realities but it’s also engaging writing that kept my interest from start to finish. It’s accessible science fiction and readable racism, layered and powerful storytelling.

I don't get it. There are better stories about slavery, better stories written by black women, and better time travel stories. I think my complaints are mostly regarding plot, though, not the actual writing. I did want to find out what happened, but I was very disenchanted by the end. "If he hurts me one more time, I'll kill him....Well.... ok, ONE more time...... Ok, ONE more I swear!" Ugh. I don't think that I would have read this if it had not been a book club choice. I usually shy away from books billed as science fiction. Despite the time travel element, I would not bill this book as science fiction. The story has powerful things to say about the experience of slavery from the point of view of a 20th century woman married to a white man. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen to Dana and how she would handle each situation.
