I had a love-hate relationship with this book which is curious since that would also describe several of the relationships within the book. There were many scenes that were difficult to read but that is to be expected in a book set mostly in the antebellum south. I believe this book is considered to be Y/A and it IS simply written but the subject matter and many of the scenarios aren't what I consider Y/A. I would say 16 and up.

I don't think that I would have read this if it had not been a book club choice. I usually shy away from books billed as science fiction. Despite the time travel element, I would not bill this book as science fiction. The story has powerful things to say about the experience of slavery from the point of view of a 20th century woman married to a white man. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen to Dana and how she would handle each situation.

A classic yet relevant novel by a black author that investigates the horrors of slavery through time travel... it's been on my list for years and I finally read it. Some of the writing was clunky and the story of 1976 Dana knowing so much about history and medicine seemed improbable. But the characters and details of the Maryland plantation are so vivid that I know this book will stay in my memory for a long time.

This book gutted me! There are so many layers to pull apart and examine. I know I'll be thinking about this book for years to come.
