This book was very cool and I think I’ve found a new favourite.
I truly think this book is objectively 5 stars. The world building is great. The magic system is unique. The characters are wonderful and fully realized. The writing is beautiful and this is literally the only book that I can think of that I’ve read that has effectively utilized second-person POV. Read it for that experience alone.

Boy did I hate this book! I gave it 3 stars for creativity because it’s definitely something I hadn’t read about, but I thought it was just a slog. I found it confusing, characters almost all unlikeable, and don’t even get me started on the chapters in Second Person. Now I realize why I have almost never read any book in 2nd person, it is just annoying to read. The twist about who the different POVs are was pretty neat, but I really wasn’t grasped by the overall plot. Not sure I will be reading

I very much enjoyed that read/audiobook. It took a few chapters to really grab and pull me in, but then I had a hard time putting it down. The characters were great and Jemisin kept me guessing how they relate to each other. The world building is excellent and the author manages to insert background detail without resorting to boring infodumps!
