Really fascinating book! The concept is so intriguing - the world built by the author is in a near constant state of catastrophe, just barely held together by a group of people who have been reviled and enslaved to the purpose of maintaining order. The book also expected the reader to do the work to catch up and deduce the order of things - the introduction didn’t hand explanations to you, but simply picked up the story and let the reader figure things out as the story moved. I can see why The Fifth Season is so lauded. It's an incredible feat of world-building that seeps into every facet of every scene and character. Jemisin chose to have multiple stories going on at once, yet each was as satisfying and interesting to read as the others, while deepening our understanding of the world. I look forward to reading on in the series.
