The Book Thief is narrated by Death and I’m not sure how effective this literary device was. It makes a certain sense as the book is about a young girl growing up in Nazi Germany and this book is considered young adult fiction so maybe a more heavy-handed trope of Death as a being with thoughts and feelings is appropriate. This is a great read. Easily one of my favorite books, up there with A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. The characters are so easy to relate to and you finished the book feeling like you know the people you just read about. Not just a little about them but truly know them. This book just goes to show how powerful words are. I'm glad I bought this so I can just keep going back to parts and reading it. If I could give this more than five stars, I would.

I read this a second time in advance of the movie release. I think I blocked out some of the worst parts of it. Great book! Still one of my favorites!
