The Book Thief is narrated by Death and I’m not sure how effective this literary device was. It makes a certain sense as the book is about a young girl growing up in Nazi Germany and this book is considered young adult fiction so maybe a more heavy-handed trope of Death as a being with thoughts and feelings is appropriate. This book is a work of art.
Death is an empathetic character who is haunted by humans, yet admires them for having the courage to die.
Hitler is merely a "strange, small man" who wanted "to rule the world with words." Yet the power of his words pales in comparison to the power of the words that live on through his victims and survivors.
This is less a work of Holocaust fiction and more a work of tiny moments that make up a life of love and loss, war and friendship.
