I'm fascinated that this was narrated by death. And, oh, the ending. I thought that the book was a great way to talk about World War II and the consequences of it. I had a hard time getting into it at times but still a pretty good read. Recommended for history geeks. It's epically long for a y.a. book but I don't think you could get around it.

I didn't like this as much as I thought I would. It was interesting and I give Zusak props for his creativity. But I guess I was expecting there to be more narrative pay off in the end, rather than just a really depressing story. I also got annoyed with the heavy handed foreshadowing. I know that it is something YA authors do so younger folk can follow the story, etc. but this was really blatant and I felt like it spoiled the major plot points.

Really good story. A very unique point of view from the narrator. The reason for an average review is that this book is about 30% longer than it needed to be. It should have been edited down, in my opinion. Unfortunately by the time I actually got to the end, I didn't care that much what happened. I might check out the movie to see if it is more concise.
