I had bought the book a number of years ago and I can't recall what the circumstances behind the purchase, but I suppose a large part of it was the reviews I had read on various blogs and that was probably a huge influence on my purchase. The Book Thief is set in Nazi Germany and is narrated by Death. Death’s first encounter with the main character, Liesel Meminger, happens when he comes to take her younger brother. This is the best book I've read all year. I found it very interesting to read about WWII from the perspective of a German girl who didn't happen to be Jewish because the stories of these victims are not often told. And of course, I identified with the main character's love of books. I would recommend this to anyone, even if it is classified YA.
