I finished this book in a courtyard of orange trees with a man playing guitar quietly in the background, and feeling very much at one with Nick Carraway. Damn the Buchanans anyway.

The Great Gatsby is lauded as the great American novel. It was quite a good book, but I honestly didn't think it earned that title. Perhaps it is because I am not American. Perhaps I do not have a comprehensive knowledge of American history. Nevertheless, F. Scott Fitzgerald's writing style, though a bit slow, added to the mystery of the character of Jay Gatsby and the muggy atmosphere of that summer of events.
