I read this as a kid, but remembered very little. Reading it now, I was surprised by how science-based and yet fairy tale-like it was. Like, sure, folds in time and space but also ultimate darkness and beautiful horse people.
The relationship between Meg and Charles is what really sold the story to me. It was charming and sweet and strong and I'd love to read more in the series. ...more

It's kind of funny, all of my friends rated this book four stars, so the rating wasn't a surprise to me. It was an imaginative adventure. Though there were times when Meg was...not my favorite character, though they usually pointed out that she's just a girl in extreme circumstances and you can't judge people on their faults alone.
