Engrossing and intelligent. Fantasy is hands down my least favorite genre and the outlandish content occasionally became a little unbearable for me, but the strong universal themes help keep everything grounded. Meg is a flawed yet relatable protagonist, and it was fascinating to explore the relationships that she has with the various other characters, whether established or new. This book feels like Anne of Green Gables to me. It feels like the Chronicles of Narnia. It feels like Harry Potter. It feels like every sweeping tale of good versus evil that ever made me sad to finish the last page.
I don't know why this book didn't call to me as a kid. I suppose I was turned off by the cover, or maybe the notion of it being sci-fi felt too much like work or math or analytical. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Hmm, I'm not so sure about this. I like the story but in my head I kept on comparing it to Narnia, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter and I just got a little bit too annoyed with the lack of world-building (as compared to you know, king of world-building, Tolkien) which is maybe unfair because this is a children's book. Also the moralistic tone - hmm.. I mean C.S. Lewis can do moralistic but then I don't find it as annoying as here.
