Meh. Classics stand the test of time because of the writing; alas, I can't say that about this classic. Perhaps it is well loved because of when many people read it: when they are young people. I'm 31, so that doesn't put me in the young person category. This book reminds me a lot of Black Beauty, a book that is prized yet fell short of my expectations. So because of some book ADD I put this down a long time ago and have only just picked it back up again to finish. it's really such a lovely story but I'm afraid it's getting a bit outdated for younger readers. Reading about them searching for their rubbers and having Marmie declare that she has "such gay girls!" may distract kids in the classroom today. It made me giggle at times and I'm an adult!
