Apple Books gave listeners the gift of many free audiobooks and this was one of them!
I recall reading the novel a long time ago, as a child, so hearing the story once again filled me with a bit of childlike wonder. Obvious problematic Colonial British language and undertones aside, the family drama and themes of nurture and renewal still very much come across.
I can’t help but wonder if I felt the same way about the ending when I read it all those years ago, as I did listening to it.

Having not read The Secret Garden since I was in my early teens, I'd forgotten quite how much the book focuses on my favourite thing: character development. Mary begins the novel as a demanding, antisocial brat who has no idea how to make herself, or anyone else, happy.
