Three friends through three stages of their lives, all told from our narrator, Kathy's, perspective. The friends are 'special' and the story of how they are special and to what purpose, as well as, the route to their own self-knowledge of these things is told predominantly via Kathy's memories starting from the age of thirteen moving forward. Couldn’t decide between 3 & 4 stars but I like Ishiguro’s writing so I chose 4. Overall the amount of ideas/themes/questions he’s able to explore & provoke in a not-lengthy book is impressive & I could talk about this book for a long time. And, the memory narration was just like An Artist of the Floating World, but the first person narrators were clearly such different people; I think he deserves a lot of credit for that. This book is most interesting if you don't spoil it for yourself before reading it because it has an impact that I believe is necessary for the author's purpose. The reader finds out "the secret" of Hailsham along with the main characters of the book, causing the final unveiling to be dramatic and devastating for both groups.
