Wow, that was bleak. It took a while to get going, and I found the narrator pretty irritating. But the ending was even more depressing than I even thought it would be, given the grimness of the premise, and for that I am impressed.
I was best friends with a girl like Ruth. She would lie, accuse me of lying, make me question my reality. I guess today we call it gaslighting. Her casual cruelty towards me is something I've never encountered before or since. Our narrator handles this personality type a lot better than I ever did, but what we both have in common is that we continued to be friends with our person, and strived to please them and to get back on their good side.
