What a completely consumable Russian doll of a book. It's this big, philosophical fiction that has this time-play, genre shifting, style altering collection of six different stories. It's writing about writing and story telling about how stories touch/influence others lives and stories. That is a lot to take on, but Mitchell does it and he does it REALLY well.

I'm searching for some complaint to make, and I feel like the clear target is that there is a gimmicky quality to that basic format/struc

I've finally finished Cloud Atlas and I'm not quite sure how a feel about it as a whole. I really like five of the narratives and think that "An Orison of Somni-451" is one of the finest dystopian stories I have ever read, but the stories never really clicked for me as part of one over-arching story.

The sixth narrative, "Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ev'rythin' After", I hate, hate, hate! It took me longer to read that one section that it did all the others combined!

I really had high hopes of reading this book, as I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and have watched it several times. Needless to say, I was disappointed for some reason. In fact, i did not even make it all the way through the book. The story that takes place far in the future, with the broken speech, was probably one of the most painful chapters I have ever read, though I do see what the author was going for. Maybe in the future I will try to read this again, but as of right now I actually regret ...more
