What a completely consumable Russian doll of a book. It's this big, philosophical fiction that has this time-play, genre shifting, style altering collection of six different stories. It's writing about writing and story telling about how stories touch/influence others lives and stories. That is a lot to take on, but Mitchell does it and he does it REALLY well.

I have a bad habit of sticking with a book even when I'm not enjoying it. I always hope that it is going to get better if I just give it enough time. I have to learn that it's okay to give up and move on to something I enjoy more. This was one of those times I should have given up. As hard as I tried I could not get into this book. I've finally finished Cloud Atlas and I'm not quite sure how a feel about it as a whole. I really like five of the narratives and think that "An Orison of Somni-451" is one of the finest dystopian stories I have ever read, but the stories never really clicked for me as part of one over-arching story.
The sixth narrative, "Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ev'rythin' After", I hate, hate, hate! It took me longer to read that one section that it did all the others combined! ...more
