My experience with Cloud Atlas, book and film, has been a most unusual one. Pretty much always, if a book in one of my general areas of interest attracts enough attention to be actually greenlit and made into a film, I won't go near said film until I've read the book, which is always better than the film (even though I love film). I figured this case would be no different, so when previews for this film started showing up before all the big dumb superhero movies and whatnot this summer, I took n ...more

While story-within-story structure supplies some interest, the bad bad things that the author does to English language in the SF tales make reading a huge chore.

The interesting thing about this book is the way the story is told. Split up into multiple parts by characters and eras, at first it's hard to see how they come together. But pay attention and little hints appear here and there. To be honest, I spent most of this book kind of frustrated. The stories are split by halves and just as each one was getting interesting, it went to the next one. I didn't think there was enough of a payoff to justify this. About 40% into this book, I would have given it 5 starts. I loved the unusual structure - the different voices of each story - the cliff hanger endings. But then I got to the sixth story, which I absolutely hated. The dialect was tortuous, the story boring, the philosophy too much like a beginning undergraduate philosophy class. My sentiments towards this central story made it difficult to finish the rest of the stories, which were okay. Overall, I have very mixed feelings about this book.

Not sure what to think of this, but maybe I would have gotten into it sooner if I had read it rather than listened? Quite amazing how it all went along though.

This is the kind of book that leaves you with the question: how can the next book I read, any book at all, possibly compare to this one? It can’t.
