My experience with Cloud Atlas, book and film, has been a most unusual one. The interesting thing about this book is the way the story is told. Split up into multiple parts by characters and eras, at first it's hard to see how they come together. But pay attention and little hints appear here and there. To be honest, I spent most of this book kind of frustrated. The stories are split by halves and just as each one was getting interesting, it went to the next one. I didn't think there was enough of a payoff to justify this. About 40% into this book, I would have given it 5 starts. I loved the unusual structure - the different voices of each story - the cliff hanger endings. But then I got to the sixth story, which I absolutely hated. The dialect was tortuous, the story boring, the philosophy too much like a beginning undergraduate philosophy class. My sentiments towards this central story made it difficult to finish the rest of the stories, which were okay. Overall, I have very mixed feelings about this book.

This is the kind of book that leaves you with the question: how can the next book I read, any book at all, possibly compare to this one? It can’t.
