I've never been a huge fan of "magical realism." In fact, I've kind of disliked the label, often thinking of it as shorthand for "fantasy written by non-anglos." I am, however, willing to admit when I'm wrong. And this is certainly one of those cases, as this work goes far beyond the conventions of fantasy. I'm going to just say that I have read this book, because I am less than 100 pages from the end but I just. can't. finish. it.
Why do we have to follow five generations of a family who are all named the same handful of names? Think that might make the story a little confusing? I haven't made any progress in this book in weeks and I am just going to quit. sooooo disappointed; I had heard such good things. ...more

DNF = I have a hard time getting into magical realism. I can't seem to find a connection with the people or the stories. It's not like I wasn't enjoying the writing, but I also didn't seem to care what happened and it was so easy to put the book down. So I've finally given up. This one is just not for me.
