Warning that there are a lot of really sad and depressing moments in this book. However, I still really enjoyed this and I'm glad I read it. Would recommend!

I really loved this novel, but it isn't quite deserving of 5 stars. This novel is a split narrative between a 16-year-old Japanese girl named Nao and an older woman named Ruth who lives in Canada and finds Nao's diary and some letters washed up on the shore. The book is sprinkled with interesting tidbits about Japanese life, customs, and language, but it centers on dark topics like suicide, cyber bullying, the 2011 tsunami, and Japan's legacy in WWII. I highly recommend this novel.

A good book. I read this in two parts, put it down and away and didn’t come back to it again until I had a chunk of time and I’m glad I did, because it took some focus and I loved it all the more for having that space to spend with it.
Ruth, Nao, Oliver, the blessed cat, Jiko and the twin tragedies of Haruki and Haruki #2 - they all came alive for me in these wheeling snapshots, metaphysical pockets of time. I’ll be looking for more of the author's work. ...more
