A complex, clever take on a reader deciding the ultimate course of a story. Nao's voice is strong and her journey is engaging and interesting to follow; her relationships with both her father and old Jiko are central to the story, and I enjoyed reading how these developed through time. However, the themes present occasionally become repetitive. This was not an easy read for me. I found it somewhat difficult to relate to Nao. Her frequent use of Japanese slang made it slow going for awhile as I needed to stop to read the translations in the footnotes. The sections narrated by Ruth were easier and I enjoyed the descriptions of her island life and her neighbors. In the end, I came to appreciate Nao and her story as well as the insights into Japanese culture.

Wow. Loved it even if I didn't totally understand the ending!
