An extremely ambitious debut with mixed results. Smith's novel tackles heritage by focusing on a cast of characters that range from two generations within two families to the many secondary and tertiary characters that interact with them, which for me became an exhausting amount of individuals to keep track of after a while. White Teeth is a fun, interesting read. Set in London from the 1970's to 2000, this book tracks the interwoven lives of a number of characters, each with their own complicated ethnic and personal histories. Her depictions of the confusions and stresses that different immigrants and their children face are really touching. Zadie Smith also writes beautifully. There were a number of one-liners and hilariously bitter exchanges that made me laugh throughout.

I'll admit I started this book a few years ago and couldn't get through it. But I picked it up again and couldn't put it down! The stories are rich and multi-dimensional and give an amazing portrait of an increasingly diverse England. The character's decisions seem real and you get this sense of honesty from the author.
