I had a conversation with a friend a few days ago about the way that belief in magic can only really exist in childhood and the rights and wrongs of lying to children about certain truths in the world they will grow up to inhabit. This book was a perfect companion for those ideas and has that special quality, like His Dark Materials or Joanna Newsom albums, of making me feel for the duration of the engagement that there might actually be magic in the world.

Shelves: fantasy

I liked this book. It reminded me of childhood and it seemed magical. Neil Gaiman is a wonderful story teller. It had a bit of a Tim Burton vibe magical, dark and weird but enjoyable.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a first novel by Neil Gaiman that I have read, it did not disappoint.
Gaiman has perfectly captured the essence of childhood; exploration, curiosity, innocence and wonder.
Would definitely recommend this book and would reread this in the future.
