I had a conversation with a friend a few days ago about the way that belief in magic can only really exist in childhood and the rights and wrongs of lying to children about certain truths in the world they will grow up to inhabit. This book was a perfect companion for those ideas and has that special quality, like His Dark Materials or Joanna Newsom albums, of making me feel for the duration of the engagement that there might actually be magic in the world.

A sweet little surreal tale of ancient magic and pond illusions and spectral kittens and wise childhood reason, with Gaiman trademarks all over.

I kicked a stone. “By ‘a bit’ do you mean ‘a really long time’?”
She nodded.
“How old are you, really?” I asked.
“Eleven.”
I thought for a bit. Then I asked, “How long have you been eleven for?”
She smiled at me.

This is my first Neil Gaiman book and I really enjoyed it. I was surprised, I had a nightmare after getting to the scary part which says a lot given I'm a grown woman in my 40's! I really enjoyed the Hemstocks and the vague way the narrator remembers them.
