I really love Gaiman's use of language, and as always, his narration is outstanding. But I kept comparing this to Stardust, and finding it a little bit wanting. The tone and themes are just so much darker than Stardust, and the plot seemed to take a bit of a backseat to imagery and language in this one. I love the Hempstocks and the idea that they've always been there, and always will be. The narrator just happened to enter their world and stirred things up for a bit.

Sorry, I just didn't like this book. I love Gaiman's imagery, and I recently read Stardust, which The Ocean at the End of the Lane is not. Now, I don't mind when authors expand their repertoires a little. (I just compared Naomi Novik's Temeraire series to Uprooted.) But I honestly think Gaiman got a little lazy here. I absolutely loved this book. Even when I read the first page, I knew this one was going to burrow into my heart and stay there for a long time. It has the feeling of reading a fairy tale, but from the point of view of being a child watching the adult reading it, and seeing on their face how sad their own recollections of childhood are. Nice little story. As a Sandman fan, it reminded me of Barbie et al's journey with Thessaly. I wish it was longer. I like the Hempmans and hope to see more stories about them.

As usual, Gaiman's writing is captivating and gives a sense of familiarity. Some of the most vivid descriptions of scenes in this work, which haunted my thoughts and dreams.
