Sorry, I just didn't like this book. I love Gaiman's imagery, and I recently read Stardust, which The Ocean at the End of the Lane is not. Now, I don't mind when authors expand their repertoires a little. (I just compared Naomi Novik's Temeraire series to Uprooted.) But I honestly think Gaiman got a little lazy here. I loved being immersed in this book; even thought it was short, I took my time with it. I loved how not everything was explained, the ending was ambiguous and a bit sad, and how it started out "normal" and then slowly took the plunge to outright fantasy. It helped that I did not know much about the book before reading it.

Nice little story. As a Sandman fan, it reminded me of Barbie et al's journey with Thessaly. I wish it was longer. I like the Hempmans and hope to see more stories about them.
