Magical, creepy and whimsical. I relished the enchanting, vivid tale that Gaiman has expertly woven and feel that it has many insightful things to say about both life and childhood. Gaiman's writing here gives the story the essence of a classic, lived-in fable that has been told for years even though it is a relatively new book. It has the feel of a short story that has been expanded, yet it is the perfect length; a short story could have worked technically but not been as emotionally satisfying

I loved being immersed in this book; even thought it was short, I took my time with it. I loved how not everything was explained, the ending was ambiguous and a bit sad, and how it started out "normal" and then slowly took the plunge to outright fantasy. It helped that I did not know much about the book before reading it.
