Unlike the rest of the world, I thoroughly enjoy Neil Gaiman. (In case my dry tone doesn’t convey, I know that the rest of the world agrees.) Ocean is his new novel for adults, although the story primarily takes place when the narrator is a young boy. We get cats magical and sometimes malevolent, a clearly malevolent nanny who once was a worm or perhaps an evil spirit, and a strong family of witchy women who may not be as straightforward as they appear.

Reading a Neil Gaiman is like slipping into the best most comforting bubble bath. You emerge a different person, the whole world seems different. This story is no different and I'm sure I will reread it many times becoming lifelong friends with the Hempstocks. ...more

Gaiman's writing here gives the story the essence of a classic, lived-in fable that has been told for years even though it is a relatively new book. It has the feel of a short story that has been expanded, yet it is the perfect length; a short story could have worked technically but not been as emotionally satisfying ...more

I liked a lot of the imagery and description in this book. I wanted more backstory and information, but perhaps that is part of the more young adult writing style.

This was a good airplane read - an engaging page-turner with a couple passages that just knocked me flat. It wasn't my favorite of his and probably not one I would reread but not bad. ...more

A lovely fairy tale, mostly for adults but it would work for kids too. My only complaint: I wish it was longer!
