What Members Thought

Not quite sure what I thought of it. It kept me reading, I wanted to know what happened. I really didn't like Quentin's character. I really didn't like any of the characters or the way the author wrote in such glorious detail about trivial details and then glossed over huge things and wrote over huge gaps of time. I will read the sequel however. Cause I'm curious like that and what exactly the point is of these books.

Edit 9/5/2016: Just read Aubrey's review of this book and she said, "The only audience I could think of that would enjoy this read are the massively perverted fantastical type. *shudder*" I had a really good laugh at this. Guess I'm a perverted fantastical type?! This is one of my favorite books, hands down, ever.
I've been watching the show lately too. It's not bad! Some large differences from the book, and while some of them are cool (like Penny!) the book is better :)

An adult, gritty take on the fantasy genre where the execution leaves much to be desired. I like the idea behind this book, but ultimately found it to be rather cold, sterile and joyless. The first portion spanning Quentin's magical education at Brakebills is fairly enjoyable; Grossman knowingly cribs from the Harry Potter series, but in a tongue in cheek manner. However, I started losing interest once post-graduation ennui set in and it became evident how unlikable and miserable of a person Que

Didn't know what to expect. I'd heard that it was an "adult Harry Potter," which is not exactly true, or that it was a "darker, more realistic Harry Potter," which is slightly more true. I'm not much of a Harry Potter fan, so I wasn't sure whether that would help or hurt. But I as pleased to see that the book stood on its own - it's not just a response to or parody of Harry Potter and the Narnia books, it's really its own thing.

I sat on this as a three star book for a while, but thinking about it I decided it's really a four. Spoilers ahoy.

A fairly suspenseful page-turner, The Magicians did have a tendency to annoy with its stunningly prevalent similarities to Narnia and the main character's constant state of angst. However, I greatly appreciated the juxtaposition between the magical and mundane throughout the story, as well as the ending, which left me with goose-bumps :-)
