A very good spooky story. It's title of Hill House is appropriate because it goes through peaks and valleys of suspense and dread followed by odd banter that seemed to drag the flow of the story. The form of narration was intriguing because it was standard third person but would display the main character's thought so much that it started to read like an internal monologue of the character going mad. This book suffers from it's own fame. I came into this book expecting a super spooky ghost story and found just an okay Gothic novel. I'm not saying it's poorly written, just the opposite in fact, but it's not scary in the least. I know it's of it's time and it's not meant to be a gallons of blood kills per page kind of horror novel, but the slow drawn out haunting can be a bit of a rag at times.
