In retrospect, the audiobook version was probably a mistake; the lackluster narration adds no spark to the book. The story falls more in the realm of supernatural and psychological than standard horror with far more dialogue than action, and although the atmosphere is certainly rich and creepy, events that take place are subtle. Though not as brilliant as We Have Always Lived in the Castle, The Haunting of Hill House is one easily one of the best haunted house tales ever written. Jackson has a talent at bringing out the creepy in the everyday world, making little mundane details of people's behavior or the construction of Hill House as unsettling as the more obvious strangeness going on.
