An excellent read for Halloween! It was a little slow in the beginning, but overall, I was enthralled by the mystery of the woman in black. Susan Hill wrote this book in the early 80s, but Hill fools readers into thinking this was written in the early 1900s with the use of Arthur's voice. She completely transports you to another time. Hill's research combined with her natural writing talent created this classic ghost story which is on par with "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."

The thing I liked most about this book was that the writing and atmosphere made it feel like the book was originally published in 1883, not 1983. It felt like a true Gothic ghost story. And it spooked me many times over. My only issue is that the ending felt rushed. The narrator eludes to his own tragedy that resulted from his dealing with the Woman in Black and so when I got to the last 5 pages I already knew what was going to happen.
