I remember reading the first few chapters of this when I was a kid, but never finishing it. I admit I was skeptical that I could find myself caring about the tactics and outcome of a rabbit battle, or find a story about a bunch of rabbits interesting at all, but this book surprises you. You're pulled in before you realize it. I think the power of this book really comes from Adams' true gift of rich characterization.

When I was about seven years old, I watched the animated movie of "Watership Down," and I was very disturbed by the images I saw. There was a lot of blood, a lot of cute fluffy rabbits killing each other,so I was pretty hesitant about reading the novel.

My very sweet mother-in-law gave me her personal copy of this book as a Christmas gift last year. She said it was one of her favorite books and now I can see why. Such a lovely story. Yes, I know it's about rabbits, but it's about much more than that. It's about friendship, leadership, and courage.
