Some spoilers are inevitable below, if you don't already know the basic plot.

As part of a new series of Goodreads challenges, it was required of me to read Jane Eyre, and I wasn't too thrilled. I've started it before and never penetrated too far. But it was in exchange for the other person watching half of Firefly (it's a challenge swap – two of us read a book apiece in exchange for all the episodes), so … I will do a great deal for Mal Reynolds, I said.

545 pages of wistfulness, swishing skirts, orphanages, unlikely coincidences, British superiority and severe Christian morality, What I hadn't counted on was the deep undercurrent of rebellion that runs through Bronte's work: the unlikely struggle of a woman holding her own against both class and gender inequities, and having her fire and faith in self ultimately rewarded. I really enjoyed this book, but I have to say, Jane Austen did it better *ducks*. This story felt unnecessarily long at times, and I found a lot of the male characters truly insufferable (and yes, that words perfectly describes them!). St John was a pompous donkey, Mr Brocklehurst a cruel hypocrite, and even Mr Rochester was overly-dramatic and inconsistent. And I missed Jane Austen's wicked sense of humor.
