Re-reading October 2017. Still entertaining as all get out. The female characters are much better in the film version.

I have adored this movie for so long I figured I ought to give the book a chance.

There are things I like better and things I think the movie did better, but the sanitizing of Hammond for the movie did not prepare me for the disaster that is the book’s Hammond. Oh my God, what a bloody narcissist. He can’t see anything that reflects poorly on himself. The obsession with the food, the ice cream! And they made Nedry out to be the evil fat hedonist!? The fatphobia in both source and film are a bit

Upon revisiting this - yeah, the movie is still so much better than the book. But really Crichton, if you want to convince people that science is terrible, you shouldn't use dinosaur cloning to do it. I'm still heartbroken that such a thing is impossible.

This is also a good example of why I avoid older sci-fi. It's hard not to laugh at the characters' getting excited over a CD-ROM. You could still tell this story with modern tech, however. You think Isla Nublar has cell reception? So it has that

All the dinosaur scenes are top-notch and I enjoyed the book overall, though I eventually started skimming the paragraphs in which characters pontificate about chaos theory, the danger of playing God, and ::shudder:: paradigm shifts in science. Interestingly, I found the character of Tim Murphy (little boy) well drawn but that of Lexy (his little sister) incredibly thin and annoying; therefore, I'm not sure whether Crichton struggles with writing children or just writing females. ...more

I was "forced" to read this for Honors Bio in school and thank god, 'cause the book is so much better than the movie (which was good too). Scientific, thrilling, smart, funny, amazing. read it. ...more

Wow, I can't believe I actually finished it. Awesome! I still think it would have been better to read instead of the audiobook I listened to.

A campy, fun book to revisit. Crichton does a great job of asking questions about scientific ethics and the pursuit of knowledge.
