Took me six months to get through this monstrosity this year, and half way through I had to switch to audiobook to keep going! One of the few books I'd recommend an abridged version for. Every page is littered with references to obscure French personalities and events, and the good bits (the actual story) is constantly interrupted by extended essays on topics like language, Parisian sewers, French nationalism, crime, poverty, etc. I found some of them interesting (I enjoyed his description of Wa
