Wow, the first half of this was excruciatingly boring. I read this a) because it's #3 on the Guardian 100 list and b) because it's still read in schools due to its status as the "first English novel". It's a story of religious awakening - in recurring patterns of imprisonment and deliverance through "divine providence" Robinson Crusoe learns to trust in rational thought and God's guidance instead of passion and nearsighted decisions.
