Wow, the first half of this was excruciatingly boring. I read this a) because it's #3 on the Guardian 100 list and b) because it's still read in schools due to its status as the "first English novel". It's a story of religious awakening - in recurring patterns of imprisonment and deliverance through "divine providence" Robinson Crusoe learns to trust in rational thought and God's guidance instead of passion and nearsighted decisions. I feel like I should have liked this more because it’s a classic and has influenced so much culture but it was quite boring. It has very little emotion despite being told in the first person. And, I know it’s a lot to ask for, from a book written in the 1700s but some contributing female characters and less racism would be nice.
