I had no idea what to expect from The Cuckoo's Calling. I'm a Potterhead (sorted into Hufflepuff, thank you very much), and I will adore Jo Rowling forever for those seven books. Her first post–Harry book, Casual Vacancy, didn't sound to my taste, and I haven't read it, don't really see myself reading it (though that may change now); the darkness and ugliness I understand are part of it are not what I generally look for. But for some reason I went and downloaded this one when I found out who the ...more

I thought this book was really great. the basic plot is this : a distraught brother comes to an old acquaintance who happens to be a private eye in order to look into the mysterious death of his sister. the problem is that said sister has been written off as a suicide by everyone else, occurring after a fight with a boyfriend. This was a decent murder mystery... but nothing special. It was a bit too long and slow and I only stuck with it because JK Rowling wrote it. In the end it was decent, but nothing special or particularly original.
