I had no idea what to expect from The Cuckoo's Calling. I'm a Potterhead (sorted into Hufflepuff, thank you very much), and I will adore Jo Rowling forever for those seven books. Her first post–Harry book, Casual Vacancy, didn't sound to my taste, and I haven't read it, don't really see myself reading it (though that may change now); the darkness and ugliness I understand are part of it are not what I generally look for. I thought this book was really great. the basic plot is this : a distraught brother comes to an old acquaintance who happens to be a private eye in order to look into the mysterious death of his sister. the problem is that said sister has been written off as a suicide by everyone else, occurring after a fight with a boyfriend. The brother is convinced that it is murder.

Immensely entertaining! The mystery here is expertly plotted with many red herrings along the way and a genuinely surprising end reveal. Strike is a fantastically unorthodox protagonist who I enjoyed following, and he and Robin compliment each other nicely through their respective working styles and personalities. Rowling does an admirable job depicting a rich and famous lifestyle as well as fleshing out her immense cast of secondary and tertiary characters, but at times I was overwhelmed by all

I want to start this off by saying that I generally do not enjoy the mystery genre. I only read this for bookclub. But yeah, I didn't care for this. It wasn't completely terrible or anything, but it seemed to hit nearly all the mystery novel/tv show/movie cliches. What it didn't do, was (view spoiler)
