I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed this. I'd tried reading it before, but got bogged down about 100 pages in; I think it was all the Tom Bombadil stuff. I skimmed his chapters this time, and once they get away from him, the story really picks up.
My favourite part was Legolas's reaction to the Balrog: "Ai! ai!!" wailed Legolas. "A Balrog! A Balrog is come!"

I re-read these books every year and I've done this since the 6th grade when I discovered them. I absolutely love them.
Update from 2025: just got done listening to the audiobook narrated by Andy Serkis…AMAZING. Loved it so much. He is of course a great narrator with amazing energy in his reading! I definitely recommend this version of the audiobook! ...more

I thought the last 170 pages were excellent, but I'll admit I really struggled through the first three quarters of the book. There were just too many songs for me . . . and I can't say I care all that much about the history of hobbits. So I didn't love it, but I am looking forward to reading The Two Towers next.
