I was captivated by the dynamic between Jean Louise, Hank, and Atticus from the moment Jean Louise got off the train at Maycombe Junction.

We're not children now. We're adults, and we can see why this journey from Scout the child to Jean Louise the young woman, whose Atticus is not the paragon of youth, is important. She's in a real world now, and the real world can be scary and ugly and lonely, but with moments of grace and understanding.

When I first heard the news about this book, I was very curious and excited to read it. Then information came out about the publication being a possible cash grab and Lee no longer being of sound state and mind, and I became much less excited, but remained curious. As the early reviews filtered in, most ranging from mediocre to poor, I decided that I still wanted to read the book, but was no longer in a huge hurry to do so. This is difficult- I knew it would be. Bless Harper Lee for giving us the gift of "To Kill a Mockingbird" and bless the alleged editor who read this manuscript and saw the talent and new that she had something greater in her to give.

This is not a five star rating in the way that TKAM is five starred. And while it is written by the same author and TKAM was a standard I judged it by this was a very different book. The writing was beautiful and thought provoking and engaging but set at a much diffe

So... that happened. Overall it just felt unfinished and kinda dull. There were a couple interesting moments, but really this is just an early draft of TKM and shouldn't have been published... or at least should have been published as an academic study of an early draft of a classic novel, not as a sequel or companion to TKM.

Not quite sure what to think of it. I have read To Kill a Mockingbird, but I don't have a great attachment to any of the characters or the book in general, which is where the general outcry has come from. I enjoyed the process of reading things from an older Scout's POV. I think Jean Louise is suppose to be about my age now. And it is interesting to see how we as adults view the things we loved as children. Our parents who were like gods to us are now flawed human beings, the town that we loved ...more

My feelings on this one are complicated, and I'll need some time to look back on the experience of reading it before I can untangle them. I did deeply enjoy noting the pieces of this manuscript that ended up in To Kill a Mockingbird in some form or another. ...more

It's a disjointed novel and, yes, the racism of a number of characters is heartbreaking. I think it was a brave book for the time it was written, especially concerning gender roles and trying to debated heated subjects with loved ones. ...more
