Excellent and often profound. Gay is a fantastic, intelligent writer and her talent is on full display here in these essays covering a wide variety of topics. Although not everything included is perfect and some pieces feel more disposable than others, I thoroughly enjoyed it all. Since this book served as my introduction to Gay, I was pleasantly surprised to find so much associated with pop culture and her analysis provides valuable criticism from a different viewpoint. Surprisingly enough, the essays on feminism (or, "bad feminism") I found to be the worst -- very superficial, shallow analyses that I couldn't believe someone of Gay's caliber had written. It may be the fact that some of the references are dated, but the arguments used were just so simple and reductionist. I find the whole "but I love men!!!" thing to be very tired.
