Read this book over the course of a month and quite honestly, I should have finished this book sooner, but due to the fact that I focusing on basically one book for the past month, I basically ignored this one. While there is much to like in this book, the depiction of Native Americans (nuanced and progressive when the book was originally published, but broad and offensive now) is enough to keep me from recommending it as independent reading for a child. It might have value in a classroom setting, especially if compared with the same story from the point of view of a Native American child (e.g., The Game of Silence).
