This story is very intense. While the author talks about zen and motorcycle maintenance, the book isn't really about either. We follow a narrator who is on a motorcycle journey with his son and some friends.
From the onset, I did not care for the narrator. I can tell that we wouldn't really be friends in real life and his tone, while trying to be non-judgmental, is terribly opinionated. Boy was this book confusing. I want to say that I liked it, but it's certainly not for everyone.
This book is dense - the author covers a breathtaking number of philosophical ideas, most of which I was familiar with prior to picking up the book.
I think what the author did extremely well was discuss modern man's love of the "scientific method" and his love of "reason". He does this (I think) in a way which indicates that this love of reason is in of itself not completely rational - that by apply ...more

Philosophy and it's related concepts are mostly foreign territory for me, so there were some parts where I got slowed way down. Also I can't say I found the end very rewarding or fulfilling. But the book certainly made me think.
