This is a brilliant, lovely and disturbing book. Trigger warnings should abound, and I have particular trouble with everything to do with Emilio's mutilated hands since my own are so often close to useless, to say nothing of the scenes of violence and, yes, rape. I listen to the Books on the Nightstand podcast and Ann Kingman, one of the hosts, rated The Sparrow as her favorite book. I'm always a little cautious about reading a book that others rave about, and especially one that's outside my usual genre. I'm so glad I took a chance on this one, as I loved it! Unfortunately the first 20 minutes was the best for me. After that, the characters got really annoying and it was the typical contemporary "let's joke about bodily fluids and curse." I wanted to try and finish it anyway, but nope. At some point I just said, "Ok, that's enou
