This is one of those books that I read with pen in my hand. Hurston's words are poetry and wisdom.

Janie saw her life like a great tree in leaf with the things suffered, things enjoyed, things done and undone. Dawn and doom was in the branches (page 8)

It is essential that one take their time reading this book. I imagine it is also essential that one take their time rereading this book. Part love story, part inspirational tale, and always historically relevant, Zora Neale Hurston's writing is as fearless as her heroine, Janie Crawford. My feelings for the book went from "like" to "love" when we finally learn what brought Janie back to Eatonville. Every choice Janie Crawford makes is a choice to live.
