I loved seeing Janie find herself and become an independent person. Hurston also did a wonderful job of describing the settings. Although the dialogue can be difficult to read, I felt it brought out personalities and made the connections between the characters stronger.

A. This was very different from anything I’ve read before. It’s the story of a woman of colour’s life; being raised by her grandmother, the various men in her life. A unique perspective for me from a writer of colour in the 30s.
