Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God has the dubious distinction of being one only 3 books I have truly hated in the entirety of my academic career, kindergarten through college. The book has pretty lofty company - its compatriots are The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. I loved seeing Janie find herself and become an independent person. Hurston also did a wonderful job of describing the settings. Although the dialogue can be difficult to read, I felt it brought out personalities and made the connections between the characters stronger.

A modern classic for sure. It took a bit for me to get used to reading the dialogue, but once I did, the story flew by. I loved how nuanced Zora Neale Hurston wrote Janie - both strong and vulnerable, independent and clinging, free-thinking and complacent.
