I loved the first half of the book, which sets up a fantastical, mysterious world of intellectualism, elitism and the kind of nerdiness that could only be understood by people who say their idea of a fun time is spending a day at the museum. It name drops classical literature references in a convincing enough way, and perfectly captures the rarefied mindset of a certain type of romantic, but in a more modern and relate-able setting. Yep, just as great on re-read. I suppose I could get a little nitpicky about the length of some of the descriptive passages, but basically, I adore the feel of this book and the depth with which it captures everything Richard is seeing and feeling and thinking through a weird and wonderful and terrifying and bizarre time in his life.
I haven't read this in YEARS. Rereading January 2010.
I think I'd give this 3.5/5 if I could, I know it blew my mind when I first read it but I didn't really remember much about it. This time I found it a little too long, and the end was a little too pat. But I think this is something I could reread every 10 years or so. ...more

Even at 559 pages, the writing in this book was so good that I never got bored. So many times, I thought about how one character or another reminded me of a person I had known--they're illogical sometimes and yet consistent with themselves, like real people. I feel like this one will stay with me for a long time.

This review is a reluctant 5 stars. It’s a masterpiece, but it’s also exhausting. You could rename it “Don’t Trust Classics Majors.”
