This surprised me in many ways. I had heard that the prose style is beautiful - and it is - but I didn't expect it to be funny. Yes, funny. With the subject matter being the pedophilic love of a man nearing 40 for a 12-year-old girl, I expected a much grimmer narrative. The first-person POV gives us instead Humbert Humbert, with his many literary allusions, multi-lingual quotes and cultural references (which reward re-reading the book) and his sense of humor, which colors many memorable scenes. ...more
