Will Waller
There's a scene in Lonesome Dove where Gus, one of the main characters, pontificates on the nature of existence. He remarks: "The earth is mostly just a boneyard. But it's pretty in the sunset." The bones of fellow compeneros dot the route north to Montana as they drive the cattle from South Texas. The bones of antagonists riddle the way too. And the hopes and dreams of the reader become bones as you realize that the future you had wanted for them can't be in the cards. Won't be in the cards.
